Looking for AR Devs for Social Justice AR App/Memorial

Description

We are creating an AR experience to accompany Hostile Terrain 94 (HT94). HT94 is a series of 150 global pop-up exhibits composed of ~3,200 handwritten toe tags that represent migrants who have died trying to cross the Sonoran Desert of Arizona between the mid-1990s and 2019. These tags are geolocated on a wall map of the desert showing the exact locations where remains were found. We are using these toe tags as AR markers to allow audiences to delve deeper into the stories giving context to the toe-tags. The AR application will also be used to reach audiences beyond the pop-ups.

The Team

Our team consist of UCLA Professor and MacArthur “Genius” Jason de Léon, the Undocumented Migration Project (UMP), and independent XR creators. Our team has been experimenting with the language of XR documentary storytelling for the past three years and believe we’ve only hit the tip of the iceberg of its potential. We’ve worked on a dozen VR/AR project combined, ranging from tech producing the New York Time’s David Bowie BMW AR experience to directing and coordinating “virtual reunions” across continents in VR to consulting for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s CARNE y ARENA.

We’ve worked with Oculus and Cannes to bring room-scale narratives to life and had the honor to showcase our work at festivals like IDFA, the Atlanta Film Festival, Camden International Film Festival, and many more. Fueled by academic rigor and technical proficiency, our team is excited and inspired by the possibilities of AR storytelling and, more importantly, how they would amplify the story at hand.
