About

Hostile Terrain 94 (HT94) is a participatory art project sponsored and organized by the Undocumented Migration Project (UMP), a nonprofit research-arts-education collective, directed by anthropologist Jason De León. The exhibition is composed of over 4,000 handwritten toe tags that represent migrants who have died trying to cross the Sonoran Desert of Arizona between the mid-1990s and 2024. These tags are geolocated on a wall map of the desert showing the exact locations where remains were found. This installation has been shown nationally and globally in close to 150 locations since 2019 and is currently ongoing.

Currently we are taking on new partners on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us if you are interested in being a host. In addition, check our hosting partner page here for updated schedules.
